Books that Inspire

We read ALOT of books in our house... but the boys still ask and we happily read.
Just before Thanksgiving a school Angie works in began a new book for 1book 1 school.  This is where every child in the school is given a book, all the same title, with a reading schedule.  The principal kicks of the reading by reading the first chapter aloud at an assembly and everyone gets their copy of the book.  This was the third book of the season.  Angie always participates so that she can talk to students about their reading... so we follow the reading schedule at home.
This was the book.  And David fell in love with the character by chapter 2. This little hamster, Humphrey, keeps a writing notebook just like David and throughout the story writes, just as David does.  He connected quickly with this character.   He added Hamster to his Santa list and the rest is history... Santa brought him a Hamster.
David named her Joy because she brings him Joy.  But at Christmas we hadn't finished the book yet.  We finished about a week ago.  And the book ends like this...
"I decided to write down some of the things I've learned from my adventures, but there was just one more line left in my first notebook.  So I thought and thought and then I scribbled down exactly what I was feeling deep in my heart:
Joy-Joy-Joy to the Whole Wide World! (And that includes YOU!) ~ Humphrey"
So, we decided upon finishing the book that David named his hamster perfectly... funny how that happened.

And here is David and Joy!

Adam was also inspired by books - books that we haven't read in months.  He was making a book with Angie on Wednesday.  She continued to prompt him for a personal story, even though she knows this is not appropriate for a four year old.  He was insistent on writing this story.  Where he pulled three random characters from books together in his own story.

So Proud!

And then he decided reading this book was better than writing another book of his own.

  1. So riveting to see two boys who adore reading, creating and acting out on what they read whether on paper or not.
